Launch of Meischlgasse Urban Development: Affordable Housing for Thousands in Liesing
On April 7, 2025, the city of Vienna announced the commencement of the Meischlgasse urban development project in Liesing, aimed at providing affordable housing for thousands of residents. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to create modern city districts that prioritize green spaces and sustainable energy solutions.
The Meischlgasse project exemplifies Vienna's innovative approach to urban planning, transforming individual residential buildings into a cohesive urban environment that enhances the quality of life for its inhabitants. The city emphasizes that social housing is the result of strategic planning and targeted support, implementing key principles of its unique housing model that promotes affordability and sustainability. The city is committed to equitable land distribution and responsible usage while prioritizing environmental considerations.
The urban development aims to transition away from gas dependency, aligning with Vienna's goal of becoming a leader in land conservation and efficient resource use. According to city officials, the integrated urban model is the most environmentally friendly way to live, with the Meischlgasse area set to evolve from construction sites into vibrant living spaces.
Liesing's district leader highlighted that the new residential area will be a critical step in ensuring affordable housing remains accessible for all generations. The project will include various community facilities, extensive green spaces, and convenient public transport access, notably with a subway station nearby, enhancing the overall quality of the residential experience.
The Meischlgasse area will be the first to employ a newly developed quality advisory board designed to ensure sustainability and high standards across both subsidized and privately financed housing projects. This initiative aims to include all developers in the planning process, ensuring a high-quality urban environment is achieved through continuous dialogue between project teams, city officials, and community members.
Central to the development is a focus on community interaction, with shared spaces such as workshops, play areas, and rooftop gardens designed to foster collaboration among residents of all ages. To address climate change and the rising temperatures associated with it, innovative measures will be implemented, including vertical and horizontal greenery, open atriums, winter gardens, and rooftop urban gardening, which will contribute to improved microclimates.
Set to unfold over the next few years, the Meischlgasse district will span approximately 9.6 hectares and feature plans for a total of 1,850 residential units, including 1,200 subsidized apartments. Expected to accommodate around 4,000 residents, the area will also feature a large public park covering 6,000 square meters. Construction is slated to begin immediately, with the first residents anticipated to move in by the end of 2026.
Registration for apartments in buildings BAG 4 and 5 is now open via Vienna's housing advisory platform, with a focus on climate-resilient urban development and affordable housing solutions tailored for single parents. The new district will also support recreational activities and promote community engagement through various facilities.
A significant aspect of the development is the introduction of a new municipal building featuring 203 affordable apartments, designed with flexibility to cater to diverse family needs. This initiative will include shared spaces that encourage neighborhood interaction and will prioritize sustainability through low-energy construction methods and eco-friendly heating systems.
The project aims to establish a supportive community environment from the outset, with dedicated support services to foster neighborly relationships even before residents move in. The registration process for affordable housing units has begun, and further details about additional housing opportunities will be made available in the coming months.
