Man Charged with Threats After Dispute Over Clothing with Former Partner
A man in his twenties from Värmland is facing criminal charges after allegedly sending threatening voice messages to his former girlfriend via a social media platform. The incident reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over the return of a personal item--a sweatshirt--following the end of their relationship.
The two individuals, both in their twenties and from different parts of Värmland, were in a relationship for several months around the turn of the year 2023-2024. After their separation, which occurred approximately a year before the reported incident, a dispute arose regarding the man's sweatshirt, which remained in the woman's possession.
According to investigative sources, in March 2025, the woman received two aggressive voice messages from her ex-partner through Snapchat. These recordings included explicit threats of physical violence and sexual assault if the sweatshirt was not returned promptly. The tone and content of the messages led the woman to file a police report, citing fear and distress caused by the communications.
The suspect admitted to sending the threatening messages and acknowledged his actions during questioning. He attributed his behavior to anger and intoxication at the time, stating that his intention was never to act on the threats but rather to express his frustration. Despite this admission, law enforcement authorities are treating the case seriously, as the threats were deemed credible and caused significant concern to the recipient.
Legal experts note that, under Swedish law, making threats of violence or sexual assault, regardless of intent to act, can constitute a criminal offense if the recipient perceives a genuine danger. The man now faces charges of unlawful threats, a crime that can result in penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment for up to one year if convicted.
The case highlights ongoing challenges associated with digital communication and interpersonal disputes, particularly following the breakdown of relationships. Social media platforms, while facilitating communication, have also provided new avenues for harassment and intimidation, prompting law enforcement agencies to treat such incidents with increased vigilance.
Authorities continue to urge individuals experiencing threats or harassment to preserve evidence and report incidents promptly. The ongoing legal proceedings will determine any potential consequences for the accused, as well as reinforce the importance of addressing threats and intimidation in digital contexts.
