New Ernst-Paul-Zimper Park Opens in Vienna
Vienna's Donaustadt district has welcomed the inauguration of the Ernst-Paul-Zimper Park, a new green space that spans approximately 13,700 square meters. This park has been designed by the city's gardening authority to provide a lush recreational area featuring ample greenery and a variety of leisure activities.
As part of the development, a total of 44 new trees have been planted, which enhances the existing tree population. The park also includes 2,000 square meters of grassy areas and 400 square meters dedicated to ornamental grasses and perennial flower beds. Shaded pergolas and diverse seating options encourage visitors to relax, while fitness and play equipment offer opportunities for movement and entertainment for residents of all ages. A unique water feature is expected to provide refreshing play during the summer months.
The park aims to combine nature and relaxation in a multifaceted environment, focusing on increased greenery, enhanced quality of stay, and attractive exercise options. This initiative is considered a significant benefit for both the community and the urban climate.
The park is designed to serve as a social hub for people of all ages, offering new play and sports facilities that cater to families as well as active individuals. A versatile grassy area is a prominent feature, providing a natural hill that can be used as a viewpoint and play area. The diverse plantings, including shrubs and ground cover, not only contribute to the park's aesthetic appeal but also promote biodiversity and improve the local microclimate.
The park's expansive grassy areas are mowed only twice a year, creating a valuable habitat for various insect species, while the flowering plants provide necessary food and nesting opportunities. In summer, the vegetation has a cooling effect as it releases moisture into the air, benefiting many insects, while in winter, the green areas offer shelter.
For the local fauna, an innovative lizard habitat has been established to support their living conditions. Additionally, a dog-friendly zone equipped with numerous seating areas and shaded spots has been created, allowing dogs to play freely.
Central to the park is the play and sports area which features a range of exercise options. Children can enjoy a nest swing, a climbing rope jungle, and a fun water play area complete with channels for water flow, a mud table, and a sand construction site for hot days. The park retains a natural depression in its eastern section to enable children to engage in nature-based play. For rest periods, wooden log benches beneath shady trees are available.
Fitness enthusiasts will find three exercise machines designed for strength training, each combining two training functions, such as a leg press paired with a cross trainer or a chest press with back training for shoulders and upper back. A drinking fountain is provided to ensure hydration during workouts and play.
