Electronic Approval Process for CT and MRI Scans Introduced

The Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) is implementing a new electronic approval system for CT and MRI examinations. This initiative aims to streamline the process by requiring healthcare providers to submit all necessary patient information prior to the approval of these imaging studies.

In light of significant financial challenges, including a projected deficit of EUR900 million, the ÖGK is exploring various cost-saving measures. This includes reinstating the requirement for prior authorization for certain medical procedures, notably CT and MRI scans. Additionally, discussions are underway regarding the regulation of physiotherapy services.

By mandating that detailed patient information be provided upfront, the ÖGK hopes to enhance the efficiency of the approval process, ensuring that only essential scans are authorized and reducing unnecessary expenditures. This shift is part of a broader strategy to maintain fiscal responsibility while still providing necessary healthcare services to the population.

As the ÖGK navigates these financial difficulties, stakeholders within the healthcare system are being consulted to evaluate the potential impacts of these new measures on patient care and access to diagnostics. The goal remains to balance cost management with high-quality healthcare delivery.
