Bicycle Police Enhance Road Safety Across Austria
April 20, 2025 - The establishment of bicycle police units across Austria is proving to be a significant step towards improving road safety. Following the phased implementation of these units starting in 2023, the outfitting of police bicycles has now been completed. Nationwide, there are currently 422 officers engaged in bicycle patrols, with 165 stationed in Vienna. These officers are equipped with 228 bicycles, including 62 electric bikes, allowing them to effectively perform their duties.
The role of the bicycle police mirrors that of traditional patrol services, with a concentrated focus on enhancing traffic safety. In 2024, the bicycle patrol issued 12,158 administrative notices and 13,213 on-the-spot fines. Although the number of fatal accidents has decreased compared to 2023, the figures remain concerning. Last year, 32 cyclists lost their lives on the roads, with 20 fatalities involving electric bikes. Additionally, there were seven deaths among electric scooter riders and 47 pedestrian fatalities.
The ongoing modernization of the bicycle police's equipment is aimed at boosting safety awareness among road users. Since April 2023, all officers have access to functional uniforms suitable for all weather conditions, and every patrol bicycle can be fitted with emergency lights. Basic training for these officers is conducted through the bicycle unit in Vienna, with further training provided in their respective federal states.
The Interior Minister emphasized the necessity of ensuring comprehensive traffic safety for all individuals, whether they are walking, cycling, or driving. The bicycle police serve as a crucial component in enhancing road safety.
The primary objective of these initiatives is to improve safety perceptions through regular monitoring and targeted patrols in traffic-calmed areas, pedestrian zones, bike lanes, and shared spaces. Special emphasis is placed on protecting the most vulnerable road users.
