Wet and Chilly Weather Forecast: Rain, Cold Fronts, and Early Winter Conditions Expected Across Austria
Austria is set to experience a significant shift in weather conditions in the coming week, with the national forecast indicating a transition from widespread rainfall to colder, early-winter temperatures. According to Geosphere Austria, the week will begin with persistent rain and overcast skies, followed by a marked drop in temperature and the arrival of wintry conditions, including a lower snowline across many regions.
Monday: Persistent Rain and Falling Snowline
At the start of the week, dense clouds will cover much of the country, bringing repeated and sometimes heavy rainfall. As the day progresses, precipitation on the northern side of the Alps and in northern Austria will become more intermittent, with occasional dry intervals. Notably, the snowline will descend in the afternoon, reaching altitudes between 500 and 1,200 meters by the evening. Morning temperatures are expected to range from 1°C to 9°C, while daytime highs will reach between 5°C and 14°C.
Tuesday: Clearing Skies and Notable Drop in Temperatures
On Tuesday, residual clouds from the previous night will dissipate quickly along the northern Alps and in northern Austria, while the southeast will see the last remnants of overnight disturbances clear by morning. Sunshine will then prevail across the country. Winds from the west will be moderate in the east and stronger in exposed locations. Early morning temperatures will fall between -5°C and +2°C, with some inner-alpine valleys in western Austria potentially experiencing even colder conditions. Daytime temperatures are forecast to remain cool, peaking at just 2°C to 8°C.
Wednesday: Sunny and Cold Start to the Day
Wednesday will begin with abundant sunshine nationwide and mostly clear skies. Only a few high-altitude, thin clouds are expected, which will not significantly affect visibility. Cloud cover will increase from the south in the evening, but precipitation is not anticipated. Winds will be generally light, with moderate gusts from the southeast to south in the far east. Morning lows will drop to between -10°C and -1°C, with daytime temperatures ranging from 1°C to 7°C.
Thursday: Increasing Clouds and Onset of Snow in the West
While the eastern half of Austria may initially enjoy occasional sunshine, dense cloud cover from the west will soon move in. Rain and snowfall are forecast for Vorarlberg and Tyrol from early morning, with snow expected above elevations of 400 to 700 meters. Precipitation will expand throughout the day, particularly west of a line from Upper Austria to Carinthia, where both rain and snow are likely. On the southern side of the Alps, the snowline will remain above 1,000 meters. The east and southeast are expected to stay dry and partially sunny the longest. Winds will blow weak to moderate from the south to west. Morning temperatures will range from -7°C to 0°C, with highs between 1°C and 9°C.
Friday: Widespread Cloudiness and Continued Wintry Conditions
On Friday, thick cloud cover will blanket the entire country, accompanied by intermittent precipitation. Regional dry spells are possible only in the far north. The snowline will generally be between 300 and 500 meters, and between 600 and 800 meters in the south. Winds will be light to moderate from the west to north. Morning temperatures are expected to dip to between -5°C and +3°C, with daytime highs settling between -1°C and +6°C.
These changing weather patterns mark a clear departure from the milder conditions of recent weeks, signaling the arrival of early winter across much of Austria. Residents are advised to prepare for colder temperatures and the likelihood of snow, especially in higher elevations and western regions.
