New Year's Eve Road Closures and Traffic Delays Expected Across Austria
Motorists and public transport users across Austria should prepare for significant traffic restrictions and delays as New Year's Eve celebrations take place. Traditional Silvester runs and large-scale festivities in Vienna and other major cities are set to prompt temporary road closures and diversions, as noted by Austrian traffic authorities.
In Vienna, the annual Silvesterlauf will mark its 49th edition, drawing thousands of participants and spectators to the city center. The race, covering a 5.35-kilometer route along the Ringstrasse and Franz-Josefs-Kai, is scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. and finish by approximately 12:30 p.m. To accommodate the event, the Ringstrasse will be closed to traffic between Operngasse and Schottengasse from 10:00 a.m., with additional phased closures along the route until about 1:00 p.m. Law enforcement and emergency services will be on site to manage traffic flow and ensure safety.
Alternative routes have been recommended for those traveling through Vienna's city center during these times. Motorists are advised to use Vordere Zollamtsstrasse, Am Stadtpark, Am Heumarkt, Lothringer Strasse, Karlsplatz, and the Zweierlinie. For wider detours, the Gürtel as well as Obere and Untere Donaustrasse or Handelskai are suggested to avoid congestion.
Public transportation will also be affected. Several tram lines, including D, 1, 2, and 71, will be shortened or rerouted between 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The 74A bus line will operate a limited service between St. Marx and Landstrasse during the event.
Traffic Measures in Other CitiesSimilar Silvester runs are planned in other Austrian state capitals. In Linz, the city center will host the Hypo OÖ Silvesterlauf, with various races for children and adults taking place between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Sections of Hauptplatz, Taubenmarkt, and adjacent streets will be temporarily closed, impacting both road traffic and Linz AG transit services.
In Graz, the New Year's festivities feature a Silvesterlauf beginning at Mariahilferplatz and extending through city streets and along the Mur river, with temporary closures expected during the event. Innsbruck will see its 23rd IKB Silvesterlauf start at 3:30 p.m., with a 1.9-kilometer route encompassing major thoroughfares in the city center. Traffic authorities anticipate delays and recommend travelers plan accordingly.
Evening Events and Additional RestrictionsBeyond the sporting events, extensive New Year's Eve celebrations will further impact transportation in Austria's major cities. In Vienna, the Silvesterpfad--one of the country's largest public celebrations--will stretch from Rathausplatz to Neuer Markt, featuring seven stages and drawing large crowds. The event area will be closed to vehicles from around 2:00 p.m. until approximately 4:00 a.m. on New Year's Day. Additional closures on the Ringstrasse, particularly near Rathausplatz, are expected, and the Stephansplatz subway station will be closed from about 9:00 p.m. onward for safety reasons.
Other cities will also host public festivities. Graz's main square will transform into a venue for the Silvester-Spektakel, while Innsbruck's Bergsilvester celebration will take place in front of the Hofburg. Linz's main square and the area around the Alter Markt will host the city's official New Year's event. In Salzburg, celebrations will be centered near the cathedral, while Eisenstadt will see gatherings at Schlossplatz. St. Pölten's Rathausplatz will serve as the focal point for local festivities, coinciding with the city's 40th anniversary as a state capital. No official New Year's events are planned for Bregenz and Klagenfurt.
Public transport services will adjust schedules and routes to accommodate the festivities. In Vienna, tram lines D, 1, 2, and 71 will be rerouted or shortened from about 6:30 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Similar alterations are expected for municipal transit in Graz, Linz, Innsbruck, and Salzburg. Authorities recommend attendees use public transport whenever possible to avoid congestion and delays.
Travelers and residents are advised to stay informed of current traffic updates and to plan their journeys in advance to minimize disruptions during the holiday period.
