Innovative Affordable Device Aims to Combat Postpartum Hemorrhage

A groundbreaking low-cost medical device designed to address postpartum hemorrhages has emerged from a research initiative led by the Politecnico di Milano. This device, which is part of the BAMBI (Balloon Against Maternal BleedIng) project, is set to undergo clinical trials, marking a significant step towards its potential use in high-risk environments.

The concept for this innovative device was conceived by a gynecologist who, during his volunteer work in regions with high maternal mortality rates in Africa and Southeast Asia, witnessed the devastating impact of postpartum hemorrhage. Recognizing the urgent need for a solution, he collaborated with researchers at the Politecnico di Milano to transform his vision into reality.

Maria Laura Costantino, a professor involved in the BAMBI project, emphasizes the device's dual focus on technological advancement and social responsibility. The team aimed to create a practical, accessible, and economical solution to mitigate postpartum bleeding, highlighting their commitment to making the device widely available, particularly in underserved communities. They have opted for a 'social' patent model, ensuring that the device remains affordable and accessible.

The BAMBI device is designed to be user-friendly, featuring components that are readily obtainable even in resource-limited settings. The kit includes a rectal probe, a protective cover, and a saline solution bag, all integrated with a patented connector that simplifies the assembly process. This innovative design allows for rapid deployment during emergencies, with the potential to save lives in critical situations.

In the event of uterine bleeding post-delivery, the rectal probe is inserted into the uterus, and the balloon is inflated with saline solution to effectively control blood loss from within. Testing has demonstrated that the BAMBI device can be operated correctly and efficiently, even by non-medical personnel, which is crucial in areas where healthcare professionals are scarce.

The team's research findings have been published in reputable scientific journals, underscoring the effectiveness and reliability of the BAMBI device. Plans are in place to transition from laboratory testing to mass production, with the connector being manufactured using injection molding techniques to keep costs low, estimated at around $5 per unit. This affordability is vital for widespread distribution in low-resource regions globally.
