Work Hours in Austria Continue to Decline in 2024

Wed 19th Mar, 2025

Austria is witnessing a notable reduction in work hours as 2024 sees the average weekly working time drop to 29.4 hours, down from 30 hours in 2023. This trend reflects a significant decrease from 32 hours a decade prior and a steep decline from 36 hours in 2004. Overall, the total number of hours worked across all employed individuals in the country was 6.88 billion hours last year, which represents a decrease of 108.5 million hours compared to 2023.

This decline in working hours occurs amidst a backdrop of a growing population and an increase in the number of employed individuals, which reached a record high of 4.49 million in Austria in 2024. Despite the government's decision to exclude a reduction in working hours from its official program, the trend towards shorter work weeks appears to be gaining momentum.

Austria's experience is part of a broader international trend where many countries are observing a gradual decrease in work hours. Yet, Austria stands out as having one of the most significant reductions in working hours in Europe between 2008 and 2023. Various factors contribute to this phenomenon, including changes in labor market policies, shifts in worker preferences, and advancements in technology that enhance productivity.

As the workforce becomes more aware of work-life balance, the demand for flexible working arrangements is increasing. This shift is prompting employers to adapt to new expectations, which may further support the ongoing trend of reduced working hours. Observers suggest that this could lead to improved employee satisfaction and productivity, as well as attract a more skilled workforce.

Looking ahead, it remains to be seen how this trend will evolve in the coming years and what implications it may have for the Austrian economy and labor market dynamics. Stakeholders across various sectors will likely continue to monitor these changes closely.
