The Association of Socialist Students (VSStÖ) has expressed regret over the sudden departure of the Green & Alternative Students (GRAS) from the coalition at the University of Vienna's Student Union (ÖH Uni Wien). According to the VSStÖ, this exit occurred without adequate prior discussions between the two groups. The VSStÖ underlined its commitment to upholding an anti-fascist and anti-antisemitic stance as an essential part of its mandate within student representation bodies.
In response to allegations raised by GRAS, the VSStÖ clarified that it has consistently condemned the events of October 7, describing them as the most serious attack on Jewish individuals since the Shoah. The organization emphasized that it has never questioned the antisemitic nature of these incidents and has maintained a firm position against all forms of antisemitism. The VSStÖ also pointed out that all coalition decisions, including matters related to public communications such as website content, were reached through consensus and mutual agreement between both factions.
The organization addressed assertions regarding its relationship with the Jewish Austrian Students (JöH) and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement. The VSStÖ stated that it has never called for a boycott of Israel, Israeli products, or Israeli artists. The association outlined that it maintains a clear policy distancing itself from BDS activities, reiterating that promoting remembrance and educational initiatives remains a central aspect of its work within university student representation.
Highlighting its efforts to foster a culture of remembrance, VSStÖ referenced its ongoing support for initiatives such as the Verein Gedenkdienst and the regular organization of commemorative and educational events. Recently, the group participated in demonstrations against the Dinghofer Symposium in collaboration with other youth organizations, and encouraged participation in the protest symposium organized by JöH.
Addressing claims that VSStÖ allegedly refused contact or orchestrated a boycott against JöH, the organization clarified that cooperation and event support have occurred on multiple occasions during the winter semester. The association noted that its requests for meetings with JöH representatives had not received responses recently. The VSStÖ reaffirmed its longstanding dedication to combating antisemitism and promoting free academic institutions, principles which are deeply embedded in its organizational values and in its coalition agreements with GRAS.
At present, the future of collaboration within the University of Vienna's student representation remains uncertain. The VSStÖ has stated its intention to continue providing constructive and stable advocacy for students during this transitional period.
