Urgent Call for Blood Donations as Reserves Dwindle in Germany

Sat 4th Oct, 2025

The German Red Cross (DRK) has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations, particularly targeting first-time donors in Saxony, Berlin, and Brandenburg. As the autumn holiday season approaches, the organization is concerned about the potential decline in blood reserves due to increased travel among the population. Kerstin Schweiger from the DRK Blood Donation Service for the North-East noted that the current stock levels are stable but precarious, especially since certain blood products, such as platelets, have a limited shelf life of only four days.

To alleviate this situation, the DRK encourages individuals to visit their website, www.blutspende-nordost.de, where they can check the demand for their specific blood type. The organization is particularly focused on recruiting new donors to fill the gap left by the aging baby boomer generation, which is gradually exiting the donor pool due to health issues.

Schweiger emphasized that now is an ideal time for new donors to begin contributing, noting that individuals aged 18 and older, as well as those in middle age, are increasingly needed to sustain blood donation levels. A typical blood donation takes about 45 minutes and can significantly impact the lives of patients in need.

As the flu season begins, the DRK also reminded potential donors to avoid giving blood if they are feeling unwell, as it poses an infection risk to both donors and staff. To accommodate more donors during the holiday period, the DRK will offer special donation hours on Saturdays.
