Unexpected Vessel Grounds Near Trondheim Amid Landslide Risks

Sun 25th May, 2025

A cargo ship that ran aground just meters away from a residential home near Trondheim has quickly attracted local attention.

However, access to the area has been restricted following multiple landslides, some reaching widths of up to 50 meters, which nearly endangered onlookers. One landslide occurred just 15 minutes after curious spectators were present at the site where the ground collapsed into the Trondheim fjord.

Emergency response leader reported that efforts have been made to disperse individuals who were too close to the landslide zone. There are concerns that nearby houses could also be at risk of being affected by the slides.

In light of these developments, police have cordoned off a larger section of the area, resulting in the evacuation of several residents. One local expressed concern about the situation, noting that his home is only 40 meters from the affected region.

Meanwhile, efforts to salvage the grounded vessel continue, albeit with increased caution due to the recent landslides. The salvage operation is expected to take over a week to complete. Geotechnical assessments are also planned around the site of the vessel.

On Thursday night, the cargo ship ran aground adjacent to a family residence in Byneset, close to Trondheim. A Ukrainian national in his 30s has been charged in connection with the incident. He served as the second officer on board and has reportedly admitted to falling asleep during his watch.

The individual is reportedly distressed by the incident and has expressed regret for the events that transpired. The shipping company involved is cooperating with authorities and has refrained from commenting further on the ongoing investigation.
