Sun 15th Jun, 2025

In a devastating incident in the Himalayas, a helicopter crash has resulted in the deaths of all seven individuals aboard. This tragic event occurred just three days after a separate airplane disaster in India that claimed the lives of at least 279 people.

The helicopter was transporting Hindu pilgrims returning from a temple situated at an altitude of over 3,500 meters when it went down. The crash took place during a ten-minute flight, as reported by various Indian media outlets, citing the local civil aviation authority in Uttarakhand. Poor visibility conditions were prevalent at the time of the accident, which occurred early in the morning local time.

Among the deceased was a small child, highlighting the profound tragedy of the incident. The helicopter belonged to a private operator and was en route from Kedarnath to Guptkashi. Kedarnath is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus, located in the southern foothills of the Himalayas.

In response to this latest aviation disaster, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has instructed relevant authorities to enhance the safety measures of helicopter services, particularly in light of this crash and other recent incidents involving helicopters.

Only a month prior, another helicopter crash occurred while transporting individuals to the same temple, resulting in the deaths of six people. The summer months see an influx of pilgrims to the Kedarnath temple, as access to the shrine, located at an elevation of 3,584 meters, is only possible during this time.

Helicopter services are frequently utilized by affluent pilgrims wishing to visit the sacred sites of the Himalayas while avoiding the strenuous trek. The recent spate of accidents has raised concerns about the safety and reliability of these aviation services.

Additionally, on Thursday, an Air India aircraft tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad in western India, leading to a staggering death toll of at least 279, including individuals in a building that the plane impacted. The first funerals for the victims of this disaster are scheduled to take place on Sunday.
