Thousands in Australia Remain Without Power Following Severe Flooding

In the aftermath of devastating floods in southeastern Australia, thousands of residents are still without electricity. Authorities in New South Wales reported that up to 10,000 buildings have sustained damage due to the flooding. Approximately 50,000 residents in various communities remain isolated from external assistance.

A rescue operations leader stated that efforts are underway to provide supplies to those cut off by land, water, and air. Residents have been urged to stay safe and refrain from attempting to navigate through floodwaters. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had to cancel a planned visit to Taree, located north of Sydney, due to challenging access conditions. He acknowledged the ongoing difficulties, noting that flood warnings and evacuation orders are still in effect.

As a result of the flooding, the death toll has reached five. In Taree, the body of a man was recovered, adding to the tragic count since the onset of the flooding. Following several days of heavy rainfall, some residents began returning to their severely damaged homes on Friday.

The northern region of New South Wales experienced three days of rainfall equivalent to the average amount typically seen over six months. Rivers overflowed their banks, inundating entire towns. Many individuals were forced to seek refuge on the roofs of their cars and homes, with rescuers successfully evacuating over 600 people.

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events to climate change. Recently, various parts of Australia, ranging from its arid interior to the tropical Pacific coastline, have experienced severe weather phenomena. According to the weather service, the ocean surrounding Australia has been unusually warm in recent months. Rising temperatures lead to increased evaporation from the ocean, which in turn can result in more intense rainfall.
