Strong Demand for Free Vaccines Leads to Increased Supply in Austria

Sat 8th Nov, 2025

The recent expansion of Austria's free vaccination program to include immunizations against shingles (Herpes Zoster) and pneumococcal diseases has resulted in considerable public interest and a marked increase in vaccine orders by healthcare providers. In response to this heightened demand, health authorities have announced that an additional 95,000 vaccine doses will be distributed nationwide within November, aiming to ensure continued access for eligible groups.

Data from the health ministry indicates that since the program's launch at the beginning of the month, approximately 100,000 doses of the shingles vaccine and 150,000 doses of the pneumococcal vaccine have been ordered by medical practices and vaccination centers. The ministry attributes this robust uptake to the recent extension of the national immunization scheme, which now provides these vaccines at no cost to qualifying individuals, particularly those aged 60 years and older as well as those in designated risk categories.

To maintain fairness and prevent supply shortages, the ministry has issued guidance to all participating healthcare providers, encouraging them to request only the quantities needed for immediate use. This is especially relevant for the shingles vaccine, which involves a two-dose schedule administered several months apart. Medical offices are advised to order subsequent doses only as patients approach their scheduled second immunization, thereby optimizing the distribution network and safeguarding availability for all regions.

Currently, about 2,000 separate healthcare facilities have placed orders for the shingles vaccine, while 2,700 providers have requested the pneumococcal vaccine. The government has confirmed that vaccine shipments are already underway and are being allocated to locations across Austria. To further bolster the program, an additional 70,000 doses of the shingles vaccine and 25,000 doses of the pneumococcal vaccine are slated for release this month, with further substantial deliveries planned for January 2026.

The expanded immunization initiative, jointly supported by federal, regional, and social insurance partners, is scheduled to continue through at least the end of 2028. According to government statements, this timeline ensures that all individuals meeting the eligibility requirements will have the opportunity to receive the recommended vaccines and benefit from enhanced protection against these potentially serious illnesses.

Alongside the new offerings, the national influenza vaccination campaign is also progressing, with around 1.4 million free flu shots made available to the public since September. The majority of these influenza doses have already been distributed to healthcare providers, reflecting consistent participation in government-led preventative health measures.

Authorities underscore that the high demand for these free vaccines demonstrates strong public confidence in Austria's immunization programs and highlights the importance of preventative care for older adults and those with increased health risks. The government continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure sufficient supply and equitable access for all eligible residents.
