As Storm Amy swept across Sweden on Saturday morning, many residents braced themselves for potential impacts. Emergency services had prepared in anticipation of the storm, especially given the severe weather experienced earlier in the year.
However, reports indicate that the storm was less damaging than expected. Emergency response teams from various regions, including Storgöteborg and Halland, noted that while there were around 120 weather-related alerts received, no serious incidents were documented. Reports of fallen trees blocking roads and minor structural damages were among the most common issues encountered.
Tommy Wollberg, a senior official from the Mitt Rescue Center, expressed relief at the relatively low level of damage. He stated that many individuals appeared to heed warnings and took necessary precautions, which likely contributed to the limited effects. Emergency services collaborated effectively with local municipalities and traffic authorities, enhancing the overall response to the storm.
In addition to fallen trees, there were isolated incidents of boats breaking free from their moorings along the west coast. Emma Nykvist from the Maritime and Air Rescue Center confirmed that no significant injuries or damage resulted from these occurrences.
Across the border in Norway, the storm's impact was felt more severely, with approximately 40,000 customers reported to be without electricity at one point during the day.
As Storm Amy moved northwards, its intensity began to diminish. Meteorological forecasts indicate that while the wind will continue to blow from the southeast, it will gradually lessen throughout the day. Rainfall is expected in many areas, particularly in Västernorrland, although no severe weather warnings have been issued for excessive rain.
Looking ahead, a brief period of stable weather is anticipated early next week before a new rain system approaches the region by Tuesday evening. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute has provided updates on the evolving weather conditions, emphasizing the importance of remaining vigilant as further weather changes develop.
