SPÖ's Schieder Urges EU to Apply Consistent Standards in International Affairs

Amid ongoing international tensions, Andreas Schieder, leader of the Austrian Social Democratic Party's (SPÖ) European Parliament delegation, has called for the European Union to adopt a more unified and proactive approach in its foreign policy. Schieder's remarks come in response to recent developments involving the United States' statements on Greenland and the detention of Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro by US authorities.

Schieder contends that the European Union must move beyond a reactive stance and instead establish clear strategic responses to emerging global threats. He highlighted the significance of the Arctic region, particularly Greenland, following prior comments by US President Trump regarding American interests in the territory. Schieder emphasized that such statements should prompt the EU to develop a comprehensive strategy for the Arctic, reflecting its geopolitical and security interests in the region.

According to Schieder, the European Parliament has previously advocated for a defined approach to the Arctic and for exploring the possibility of closer ties with Greenland. He criticized the tendency to dismiss provocative rhetoric from other global actors, arguing that the EU should transition from discussion to decisive action. In addition to the situation in Greenland, Schieder referenced the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, noting that the EU should not attempt to separate its responses to different international incidents. The SPÖ delegate pointed out that it is inconsistent for the EU to condemn violations of international law in some contexts, such as Russia's actions in Ukraine, while potentially overlooking similar challenges posed by the United States. Schieder maintained that the principle of international law must be applied universally, regardless of the countries involved.

While acknowledging the need for democratic change in Venezuela, Schieder asserted that legal norms and international regulations should be upheld in all circumstances. He described the Venezuelan leadership as authoritarian but insisted that responses to such regimes must remain within the bounds of international law if the EU is to uphold its credibility and protect its interests on the global stage.
