Russia Claims Complete Control Over Kursk: A Setback for Ukraine

Sat 26th Apr, 2025

The Russian military leadership has announced the complete reclamation of the Kursk region, as reported by Reuters. General Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, informed President Vladimir Putin that Russian forces have regained full control. In a recent statement, Putin declared that Ukraine's military operations in Kursk have ended in total failure, asserting that this reclamation paves the way for future Russian successes on the battlefield.

General Gerasimov highlighted the significant contributions of North Korean soldiers in this operation, commending their strength and heroism, according to reports from Kyiv Independent.

However, the Ukrainian military has firmly denied these claims, stating that the fighting in Kursk is ongoing. They also indicated that military operations are still active in the neighboring Belgorod region.

Military expert Johan Huovinen, who teaches at the Swedish Defence University, cautioned against fully trusting the Russian reports but acknowledged that they seem plausible. He mentioned that a Russian offensive had recently reclaimed the larger town of Sudzha, and since then, Ukrainian forces have only managed to maintain control over smaller areas of limited strategic importance.

Ukraine had previously launched a surprise offensive last year, managing to capture parts of the Russian region, but in recent months has been losing ground. According to Huovinen, the reported Russian reclamation does not constitute a significant military loss for Ukraine, although it represents a setback in the context of potential negotiations for ceasefire or peace.

He noted that Ukrainian forces have likely not allocated substantial resources to the Kursk area recently, focusing instead on preventing further territorial losses in the eastern regions of Ukraine.

As to whether the offensive was ultimately a failure, Huovinen refrained from labeling it as such. He pointed out that it had provided benefits by alleviating some of the pressure on the fighting in eastern Ukraine. Nevertheless, it is evident that Ukrainian forces would have preferred to maintain their hold on Kursk for a longer duration.
