A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to almost 18 years in prison following a lengthy trial in Gothenburg. The proceedings, which lasted several weeks and involved four prosecutors, focused on various serious charges, including drug offenses, murder, and attempted murder.
The individual admitted to significant involvement in drug trafficking, which was one of the charges against him. However, he contested the accusations related to murder and attempted murder, which included shootings and explosions.
During the trial, the defendant, previously silent while in custody, unexpectedly provided details about his involvement in organized crime in western Sweden. He acknowledged that he had been operating under several aliases to encourage and instruct minors on various chat platforms. Despite this, he denied being the instigator of the crimes committed by these minors.
Among the serious incidents connected to his actions was the shooting of a young retail worker at Kungsmässan shopping center in Kungsbacka last October, which involved a 14-year-old who was found guilty of attempted murder. Another 15-year-old was also convicted for assisting in this attempted murder.
In addition to the shooting, the case involved two minors who executed notable bombings using hand grenades in Partille and Angered during the same timeframe.
The defendant denied involvement in a separate charge of attempted murder on Hisingen, and the court acquitted him of that particular allegation. Nevertheless, he was found guilty of the other three charges.
Prosecutor Viktor Törneke emphasized the importance of moving beyond just the perpetrators of such violent acts, highlighting that those who aid and abet can also face substantial sentences. The prosecutor noted that the defendant occupies a role in the middle tier of organized crime, neither a leader nor merely a foot soldier, but someone significantly involved in criminal activities.
The court determined that the defendant played a crucial role in the attempted murder by supplying the firearm used by the 14-year-old shooter at Kungsmässan. He was also convicted for involving minors in criminal activities and for serious weapon offenses.
In addition to these convictions, he received sentences for instigation of attempted murder, instigation of public endangerment due to the grenade attacks, and for drug-related offenses committed in Finland, along with serious weapon charges linked to a submachine gun discovered during a search connected to drug investigations.
In total, the Gothenburg District Court deemed the crimes serious enough to warrant the maximum fixed sentence of 18 years. However, he received a two-month reduction from this sentence due to the time he has already spent in custody. The prosecution has yet to decide whether to appeal the court's ruling on the acquitted charge.
The defendant's attorney has been sought for comments regarding the ruling.
