Plant Protection Plays a Key Role in Safeguarding Domestic Food Supply

Plant protection is a fundamental component of Austria's agricultural sector, ensuring the efficient and sustainable production of crops and food. The overall volume of plant protection substances applied to crops has dropped by approximately 7.1 percent. More notably, the usage of chemical-synthetic plant protection agents has decreased by 30 percent compared to figures from 2011. This reduction underscores the sector's progress in adopting modern, precise, and environmentally compatible methods for managing pests and diseases.

Furthermore, the growing use of plant protection products approved for organic farming has contributed significantly to the total reported volumes. These substances are permitted within organic production standards and are considered less harmful to the environment, supporting the transition towards more sustainable agricultural practices.

The assessment of plant protection product safety relies not only on the volume applied but also on the risk posed by specific substances. The weight of an active ingredient is not a direct indicator of its environmental or health impact. Comprehensive risk assessments are essential to ensure both effective crop protection and the safety of consumers, workers, and ecosystems.

Without effective plant protection measures, the reliable supply of high-quality domestic food would be jeopardized. The agricultural sector's adoption of advanced techniques and its focus on responsible use of plant protection products help safeguard harvests against pests and diseases while maintaining Austria's standards for food safety and environmental protection.
