On Saturday afternoon, the Viking Line cruise ship Gabriella departed Stockholm en route to Helsinki, despite the impending arrival of Storm Johannes, which was forecast to bring severe winds to the Baltic Sea region. As the vessel set sail, meteorological warnings had already been issued, with the storm expected to intensify towards midnight.
Upon arrival at Helsinki's South Harbour on Sunday morning, disembarking passengers displayed clear signs of fatigue, a reflection of the challenging conditions experienced during the overnight crossing. The storm resulted in strong winds and high waves, causing significant movement of the ship throughout the journey.
Several passengers reported that they opted to remain in their cabins for the duration of the crossing to ensure their safety and comfort. Many, particularly those on their first cruise, expressed heightened concern due to the unpredictable weather. Some sought to prepare for potential emergencies by reviewing safety procedures and familiarising themselves with evacuation protocols.
Onboard facilities such as the sauna were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure, and passengers were advised to avoid unnecessary movement within the ship. The crew took multiple steps to secure items throughout the vessel, including fastening products in the onboard shops to prevent them from falling as the ship pitched on the waves.
Despite the challenging weather, most passengers managed to avoid injuries or serious discomfort. However, some families experienced notable difficulties, including seasickness among children and disrupted sleep due to the ship's pronounced rolling. Preventative measures, such as motion sickness medication, proved helpful for some passengers.
The ship's buffet and other services operated smoothly during the initial stages of the voyage, when the vessel was still within sheltered archipelago waters. However, as the storm intensified, movement onboard became more difficult, with reports of glassware falling and increased difficulty in walking through public areas.
Cruise organisers and crew maintained regular communication with passengers, reassuring them of safety protocols and the vessel's capability to withstand severe weather. Prior to departure, some passengers considered postponing their travel but ultimately proceeded after receiving assurances regarding the ship's operational safety standards.
While the crossing was far from routine, all passengers disembarked safely in Helsinki. The incident highlights the importance of thorough preparation and robust safety measures when operating passenger vessels during adverse weather conditions in the Baltic Sea.
