Black Friday, Fast Fashion and the Cost of Constant Consumption

Nearly a decade after launching their first establishment in Vienna's Augarten district, the Formisano brothers have continued to shape the local dining landscape. Their original restaurant quickly became a popular destination for patrons seeking a taste of Italy, with its lively atmosphere and Italian specialties drawing crowds, especially on weekends. During the pandemic, the venue saw long lines for its signature Cornetti con Crema, and in normal times, it was known for its vibrant gatherings.
Recently, the original Monte Ofelio location was closed, reportedly due to temporary building regulation issues and possibly due to the high volume of guests that often filled the limited space. Despite this setback, the Formisano brothers have diversified their offerings across Vienna, ensuring their culinary influence remains strong in the city.
Their latest addition, Crudo, is situated on Gumpendorfer Straße in the premises of a former cocktail bar. Joining their other ventures--the Monte Ofelio Bar on Schottenbastei and the Pizzeria/Bar Ribelle on Praterstraße--Crudo stands out with a more spacious and subdued interior compared to its predecessor. Notable design features include long receipts adorned with various sayings hanging from the ceiling, contributing to the venue's distinctive atmosphere.
The menu at Crudo complements its bar offerings. Alongside a range of cocktails, with Negroni as a specialty and Prosecco available, guests can choose from a selection of Italian-inspired small plates. Bruschetta is a highlight, with options such as artichoke and Bacalà served with Pecorino cheese providing a creamy yet subtle flavor profile. Prices for these dishes range from EUR6.80 to EUR7.80.
For those seeking more substantial fare, the menu includes smoked Angus carpaccio and beef tartare. While the carpaccio is noted for its pronounced saltiness, the tartare is recommended by regular patrons. As the evening progresses, Crudo attracts a diverse clientele, from young professionals to a younger generation interested in the city's culinary trends, demonstrating the continued appeal of the Formisano brothers' approach to hospitality.
Crudo is currently in its soft opening phase, operating from Tuesday to Saturday, 9 AM to 11 PM. With this latest venture, the Formisano brothers further contribute to Vienna's dynamic gastronomic scene, offering a blend of Italian flair and local innovation.
