Greenpeace has issued a stark warning of a potential environmental disaster following the collision of two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman. Satellite imagery released by the environmental organization on Thursday revealed a significant oil slick extending up to 1,500 hectares around the site of the accident.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night near the coast of the United Arab Emirates, where two tankers collided. The UAE Coast Guard successfully rescued 24 crew members from the vessels. According to Greenpeace, one of the tankers involved, named the Adalynn, is part of what is known as the Russian shadow fleet. This fleet is reportedly utilized for the export of Russian oil while circumventing the sanctions imposed by Western nations against Moscow.
Greenpeace highlighted concerns that the shadow fleet employs outdated ships that operate below established safety standards. The Adalynn, which is 23 years old, is capable of carrying up to 70,000 tons of crude oil. The organization has urged local authorities to prepare for a potential environmental catastrophe.
The UAE's Ministry of Energy reported that the collision occurred off the coast near Khor Fakkan, a strategic area close to the Strait of Hormuz. Preliminary investigations suggest that a navigational error by one of the ships led to the accident. The ministry noted that the collision resulted in minor damage to the hulls of both vessels, as well as a small oil leak and a fire.
Environmental advocates have expressed deep concerns over the repercussions of the spill, which could have lasting effects on marine life and coastal ecosystems in the region. The Gulf of Oman is an ecologically sensitive area, home to diverse marine species and important fishing grounds.
Greenpeace has called for immediate action to contain the spill and mitigate its impact, emphasizing the need for robust regulatory measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. The organization has also urged the international community to scrutinize the operations of the shadow fleet, advocating for stronger enforcement of maritime safety regulations.
The situation continues to develop as authorities assess the extent of the damage and coordinate response efforts. Greenpeace and other environmental groups are closely monitoring the situation, highlighting the importance of responsible shipping practices to protect fragile marine environments.
