Former Styria Governor Christopher Drexler to Leave Politics for Healthcare Sector Role

Fri 24th Oct, 2025

Christopher Drexler, the former governor of Styria, has announced his intention to withdraw from political life and transition into a leadership position within the private healthcare sector. This development follows the results of the November 2024 regional elections, in which the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) lost its leading position in Styria to the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), resulting in Mario Kunasek assuming the top regional office.

Drexler, who played a key role in negotiating the coalition agreement with the FPÖ following the election, will formally take part in one final parliamentary session before concluding his 25-year tenure in the Styrian parliament. His departure marks the end of a significant era in Styrian politics, as he had been a prominent figure in regional governance, particularly in roles related to health and cultural affairs.

Upon leaving politics, Drexler will move to Sanlas Holding, a company specializing in the operation of sanatoriums and care facilities. In his new capacity, he will oversee personnel management and contractual partnerships, leveraging his extensive experience in healthcare administration gained during his time as Styria's health spokesperson and minister. Drexler is recognized for his in-depth knowledge of health sector challenges and his ability to manage complex organizational structures.

Throughout his political career, Drexler was deeply involved with the Austrian Workers' and Employees' Federation (ÖAAB), where he rose to prominence within the Styrian branch. He is expected to retain an honorary position within the organization, though he will not hold any further official political responsibilities.

Drexler's career began in the early 2000s, when he led the Styrian ÖVP parliamentary group before advancing to the role of regional minister in 2014. In 2017, he assumed responsibility for the region's cultural affairs, a portfolio he had actively sought. In July 2022, he succeeded Hermann Schützenhöfer as governor, capping a long-standing trajectory of public service and leadership within the party.

Colleagues have often described Drexler as a liberal-minded and articulate leader, noted for his broad expertise and pragmatic approach to policy. While his departure had been anticipated following the 2024 election results and subsequent leadership changes within the ÖVP, his shift to the private sector underscores a broader trend of experienced public officials moving into strategic roles in industries aligned with their public sector experience.

Manuela Khom has succeeded Drexler in his previous capacity, taking over responsibilities in the Styrian parliament. Drexler's exit from active politics is seen as a significant transition for both the regional government and the ÖVP, as the party adapts to its new position in Styrian politics following a significant electoral shift.
