Flight Reductions Across Major US Airports Due to Ongoing Government Shutdown

Due to an ongoing federal government shutdown, flight operations in the United States are set to be reduced starting Friday. The Department of Transportation announced that flight capacities at 40 of the nation's busiest airports will be decreased by 10 percent. This measure aims to alleviate the growing strain on air traffic controllers, many of whom have been working without pay since the beginning of the shutdown.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) emphasized that the affected airports are key hubs within the national airspace system. The decision to scale back flight schedules is intended to maintain operational safety and efficiency amid staffing shortages, as the shutdown continues to impact essential personnel.

Transportation officials have expressed concerns that the prolonged budget impasse has led to increased absenteeism among air traffic controllers, with many calling in sick due to missed paychecks. These staffing challenges come at a critical time, as two major holiday weekends in November are expected to drive significant increases in air travel, particularly around Thanksgiving, when millions of Americans typically travel to visit family and friends.

In recent weeks, several major airports, including Houston, have already experienced extended delays and a higher number of flight cancellations. The disruptions have been attributed to reduced staffing and increased pressure on those still working. More than 60,000 air traffic controllers and employees of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are currently working without pay. Approximately 1.4 million federal employees are either furloughed or working without pay.
