Escalating Border Conflict Between Thailand and Cambodia Poses Ongoing Risks for Tourists

Sun 14th Dec, 2025

The ongoing conflict along the border shared by Thailand and Cambodia has intensified, creating a hazardous environment that is expected to remain unpredictable for the foreseeable future. The dispute, which centers on the more than 800-kilometer boundary between the two Southeast Asian nations, has historical roots dating back to early 20th century colonial-era territorial divisions. These longstanding disagreements have periodically resulted in military tensions, most notably over the control of several ancient temples that hold significant religious and cultural value for both countries. The allocation of these sites to Cambodia during colonial boundary demarcations has long been a point of contention with Thailand, which has never fully recognized the historical border arrangements.

Renewed hostilities erupted recently, with fighting persisting for nearly a week and no immediate indications of de-escalation. The situation was aggravated by failed diplomatic efforts, including an attempted ceasefire negotiated in the previous year. During initial outbreaks of violence last summer, diplomatic intervention led to a temporary halt in hostilities. However, subsequent incidents--such as injuries to Thai soldiers attributed to landmines--quickly reignited the conflict. Thailand has accused Cambodia of deploying new landmines along the border, an allegation Cambodia denies, asserting that any landmines present are remnants from earlier conflicts in the 1980s.

Military operations have since escalated, with Thailand conducting airstrikes on Cambodian territory and Cambodia reportedly launching grenade attacks into Thai border villages. The violence has resulted in significant displacement, with over half a million civilians forced to flee their homes on both sides of the border. The humanitarian impact is substantial, as families seek refuge from the intensifying combat and uncertainty surrounding the border region.

International mediation efforts have thus far failed to yield a lasting solution. Attempts at brokering new ceasefire agreements have been unsuccessful, with conflicting reports from the involved governments. Despite assurances from international actors that progress had been made, official statements from both the Thai and Cambodian leadership have not confirmed any new ceasefire arrangements. Fighting resumed within hours of these diplomatic statements, signaling the fragility of the situation and the deep mistrust between the parties involved.

The prospects for an immediate resolution remain bleak. The Thai government has maintained a firm stance, demanding the removal of all landmines and the withdrawal of Cambodian military units as prerequisites for peace talks. Meanwhile, Cambodia has closed all border crossings with Thailand and accused the Thai military of targeting civilian infrastructure, including bridges and hotels. In response to the escalating conflict, authorities in Thailand have imposed curfews in the southeastern province of Trat, which borders Cambodia, in an effort to protect civilians and maintain order.

For international visitors, the border region now represents a high-risk area. Travel advisories have been issued warning tourists to avoid the area until further notice, citing ongoing military operations and the unpredictable security situation. The presence of landmines, active military engagement, and restricted border access collectively contribute to the region's instability. Tourism, a significant economic driver for both countries, is likely to be adversely affected as long as tensions persist.

The current escalation underscores the complexity of border disputes rooted in historical grievances and the difficulties faced by international mediators in facilitating lasting peace. As both governments hold firm to their respective positions, and with public sentiment influencing political decisions, the likelihood of a swift resolution remains uncertain. The affected border communities continue to face displacement, and the area is expected to remain unsafe for travelers for an indefinite period.
