Eiffel Tower Free from Rust Concerns After Renovation

Tue 29th Apr, 2025

The Eiffel Tower in Paris, a prominent global landmark, is reportedly in excellent condition, dispelling long-standing fears of rust damage. Jean-François Martins, president of the organization that manages the tower, stated that the iconic structure remains remarkably solid as it nears the completion of a comprehensive renovation.

During the ongoing repainting project, which has involved the removal of 19 layers of paint in certain areas, the team discovered that the underlying metal is in outstanding condition. The high-quality materials chosen by Gustave Eiffel during the tower's construction have proven resilient over time.

Concerns regarding potential rust issues had previously led to employee strikes as workers demanded increased funding for maintenance. However, the current renovation, which commenced in 2019, is now nearing completion and is projected to finish by 2026. This extensive repainting effort, costing approximately 80 million euros, had faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and complications arising from lead-based paint.

In addition to the restoration of the tower's exterior, a significant investment of 58 million euros has been allocated to refurbish one of the three visitor elevators, with a focus on maintaining the original design.

While the iconic structure is being revitalized, plans to reinstall a replica of the Olympic rings atop the tower have stalled. Following the removal of the original rings after the conclusion of the Summer Olympics in the previous year, Paris officials expressed their intention to mount a replica by the time of the next Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028. However, a specific timeline for this project has yet to be established.

In positive news regarding visitor experiences, recent surveys indicate a significant increase in guest satisfaction at the Eiffel Tower. Approximately 96% of guests reported being pleased with their visit, a notable rise from 81% in 2019. Furthermore, perceptions of safety around the monument have improved, with a decrease in thefts and aggressive incidents attributed to increased police presence in the area.

In the past year, the Eiffel Tower welcomed 6.3 million visitors from 150 countries, with the largest groups coming from France, the United States, and Germany.
