A catastrophic fire swept through a residential high-rise complex in Hong Kong, resulting in the deaths of at least 44 people and leaving 45 others in critical condition. Local authorities have reported that 279 individuals remain unaccounted for following the blaze at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate, located in the Tai Po district. The incident has marked one of the most severe fire tragedies in the city's recent history.
The fire, which broke out during the day, rapidly escalated and was classified at the highest emergency level by officials. Emergency services were dispatched in large numbers as the situation intensified, with the flames engulfing seven separate residential buildings within the complex. The affected estate consists of eight towers, each rising 32 stories and collectively containing around 2,000 apartments. At the time, the buildings were undergoing renovation and were enclosed with bamboo scaffolding and green safety netting, which are now under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation into the fire's origins and spread.
Authorities are focusing their inquiry on the safety standards and materials used in the scaffolding and netting systems, as these may have contributed to the rapid propagation of the fire. In response to preliminary findings, law enforcement has detained three individuals on suspicion of negligent manslaughter in connection to the incident. Further details are expected to be released by police during an upcoming press conference.
Firefighters and emergency personnel faced significant challenges in controlling the blaze, as thick smoke and falling debris hampered rescue efforts. Reports indicate that numerous residents were trapped in their apartments, prompting a surge of emergency calls as the fire progressed. Tragically, among the deceased was a 37-year-old firefighter who lost consciousness in the line of duty and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
More than 800 firefighters and medical responders, supported by over 140 emergency vehicles, were mobilized to manage the disaster. Residents in neighboring areas were instructed to keep their windows and doors closed and to avoid the vicinity of the affected buildings. Authorities established a hotline to provide updates for family members seeking information about their loved ones.
The Hong Kong administration has pledged to mobilize all available resources to bring the situation under control. The city's leadership has also received messages of condolence and support from national authorities, with assurances of assistance for those impacted by the tragedy.
Images and video footage circulating from the scene show towering smoke plumes and flames spreading across the scaffolded exteriors of the buildings. Burning debris was seen falling from several floors, and multiple fire sources were visible inside various apartments. The fire forced approximately 900 residents to take shelter in temporary accommodations organized by city officials.
As the recovery and identification efforts continue, authorities have reiterated their commitment to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire. Safety procedures related to building renovations and the use of construction materials are expected to face increased scrutiny as part of the broader response to this disaster.
