Cold Weather Set to Replace Unusually Mild Autumn Across Sweden

Tue 11th Nov, 2025

Sweden is bracing for a significant shift in weather conditions as colder air is forecast to sweep across the country following an unseasonably mild autumn. Meteorological agencies indicate that temperatures will drop markedly in southern regions by Thursday, with the Stockholm area expecting daytime highs around five degrees Celsius.

Over the coming days, colder air masses are projected to move progressively southward, ushering in sub-zero temperatures in many parts of the country. By Friday evening and overnight into Saturday, forecasts suggest that even the southernmost areas could see temperatures fall to between minus two and minus three degrees Celsius. Daytime highs will remain slightly warmer but will still be below the seasonal average.

In northern Sweden, the onset of winter conditions has already occurred. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI) has issued warnings for sudden icy conditions in the coastal regions of Västerbotten and Norrbotten from Tuesday evening through Thursday. These warnings highlight the risk of hazardous road conditions due to rapidly forming ice, particularly during morning and evening hours.

Additionally, snow is anticipated in the mountainous areas of northern Sweden on Wednesday. The coldest temperatures are expected towards the end of the week, with interior regions potentially dropping to minus ten to twelve degrees Celsius, while coastal areas are likely to see temperatures around minus five degrees.

Southern parts of Sweden may also experience snowfall, although current forecasts indicate that any significant accumulation is unlikely until late next week. Meteorologists caution that longer-range forecasts can be uncertain and subject to change as new data becomes available.

The onset of cold weather marks a stark contrast to the preceding weeks, which have been notable for their mildness. Throughout October, average temperatures in both Götaland and Svealand were slightly higher than the long-term norm, while Norrland experienced temperatures several degrees above average. The highest temperature recorded during October was 18.8 degrees Celsius in Vänersborg on the 11th, underscoring how unusual the recent autumn warmth has been.

As colder conditions settle in, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution, particularly on roads that may become icy overnight. Residents in affected regions are advised to keep updated with local weather alerts and to take appropriate measures to ensure safety during the transition to winter weather.

The upcoming change in weather signals the end of the extended mild spell and a return to more typical November conditions as Sweden moves closer to the winter season.
