Caritas Proposes Alternatives to Bottle Deposit Rings in Vienna

Sat 31st May, 2025

In response to the implementation of bottle deposit rings at waste bins in cities like Linz and Innsbruck, the Caritas organization in Vienna has suggested alternative solutions for aiding individuals facing poverty. These deposit rings are designed to allow people to leave refundable beverage bottles and cans for those in need; however, the Vienna municipal authorities have opted not to introduce similar measures. They expressed concerns that these deposit rings would attract not only deposit bottles but also various types of litter.

Klaus Schwertner, the director of Caritas Vienna, highlighted the possibility of donating deposit coupons to those in need. This initiative would enable individuals to choose how to allocate their donation, whether to a low-income family or an elderly person on a minimal pension. Schwertner emphasized the importance of aiding those in dire financial circumstances, particularly as the demand for food assistance has increased significantly.

In the previous year, Caritas distributed a staggering 951 tons of food through its 15 distribution centers in Vienna, known as 'Leo.' The primary recipients of this assistance include single parents, large families, and low-income pensioners, all of whom rely on these food supplies for survival.

Schwertner noted a troubling trend: while the need for food aid continues to grow, the level of donations has not kept pace. He warned that the pressures on those living in poverty are likely to intensify, especially with recent austerity measures that disproportionately affect low-income households, as indicated by the budget office of the parliament.

To address the increasing demand for assistance, Caritas is actively seeking more volunteers to help in their distribution efforts. The organization aims to mitigate the rising levels of food insecurity and support the vulnerable populations in Vienna effectively.
