Philippine police reported that one of the suspects visited a firearms shop during a 28-day stay in Davao prior to the attack.

During the attack, police fatally shot the 50-year-old father who was one of the assailants. His 24-year-old son, who sustained serious injuries and remains under police supervision in hospital, faces charges of 15 counts of murder and terrorism.
