Austrian Archdiocese Launches Streamlined Online Process for Rejoining Catholic Church

The Archdiocese of Vienna has introduced a new digital service that allows individuals who have previously left the Catholic Church to rejoin quickly and conveniently online. This initiative responds to the growing trend of digitalization in administrative processes and aims to accommodate the evolving needs of the population.

In recent years, leaving the Catholic Church in Austria has become a straightforward procedure, often completed through an online form provided by authorities. In 2024 alone, more than 71,500 people formally left the Catholic Church using either the digital platform or by visiting municipal offices. Recognizing that changing life circumstances may prompt some former members to reconsider their decision, the Archdiocese has now simplified the return process with a new online platform.

The new system enables former members to initiate their return via the official portal by verifying their identity through the ID Austria authentication service. Once the application is submitted, the Archdiocese commits to providing confirmation of reentry within a matter of days. This confirmation restores full access to all Catholic sacraments and services, such as eligibility to serve as a godparent, participate in a church wedding, receive Holy Communion and the Anointing of the Sick, obtain a Catholic funeral, and assume church-related roles and responsibilities.

Following digital identification, applicants are prompted to schedule a meeting with a priest. This conversation, which can be conducted online via video call or by telephone, is intended solely for pastoral support rather than for doctrinal assessment or verification of religious knowledge. The Archdiocese has designated five specially trained priests to facilitate these online conversations, ensuring that pastoral care remains at the center of the reentry process. Notably, individuals returning to the Church are not required to pay backdated church contributions for their period of absence.

The Archdiocese emphasizes that while the digital option offers significant convenience, individuals may still choose to rejoin the Church in person at any parish throughout Austria. The new online service is designed as a supplementary measure, reflecting the modern realities of daily life and the increasing preference for digital interactions. The national platform, available at eintreten.at, extends this service to all dioceses across Austria, regardless of whether applicants use the ID Austria system or reside outside Vienna.
