Authorities in western Turkey have confirmed the recovery of at least 14 bodies following the sinking of an inflatable boat in the Aegean Sea near Bodrum. The incident occurred off the coast of Mugla Province, a region frequently used by migrants attempting to cross into Greece.
According to official reports, the vessel was carrying a total of 18 individuals when it began to take on water and eventually sank in the early hours of Friday. The Turkish provincial governor's office indicated that the group included people attempting to migrate illegally, with at least one Afghan national among them.
Rescue teams responded after receiving a distress call from one of the passengers, who managed to swim for approximately six hours before reaching safety and alerting authorities. This survivor, along with one other person found alive, are the only confirmed survivors from the boat as of the latest update.
Efforts to locate the remaining missing passengers are ongoing, with search and rescue operations continuing both at sea and along the coastline. Turkish coast guard personnel have deployed boats and divers to scour the area, while aerial support aids the search for additional survivors and victims.
The Aegean Sea remains a principal route for migrants and refugees attempting to reach European territory, particularly the Greek islands. These journeys are often undertaken in overcrowded and unseaworthy vessels, which significantly increases the risk of accidents and fatalities. The incident near Bodrum underscores the ongoing dangers faced by migrants navigating the perilous waters between Turkey and Greece.
Local officials have not yet released the identities or nationalities of the deceased, as notification of families and further investigations are underway. The recovered bodies have been transported to local facilities for identification and necessary formalities.
The Turkish authorities continue to coordinate with international organizations and neighboring countries to manage migration flows and prevent further tragedies at sea. The government has reiterated its commitment to enhancing maritime patrols and strengthening efforts to combat human smuggling operations in the region.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges in the eastern Mediterranean. Despite increased patrols and international agreements aimed at curbing illegal crossings, many continue to risk their lives in search of safety and better opportunities in Europe.
Officials are urging anyone with information about the incident or missing individuals to come forward as search and identification efforts continue. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are providing support to survivors and working with authorities to address the needs of those affected by the tragedy.
