Özgür Özel Emerges as Key Voice of Turkish Opposition Against Erdogan

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

Özgür Özel, the leader of Turkey's main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), has recently taken a prominent role in challenging President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Following the controversial arrest of Istanbul's Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Özel is rallying support to maintain pressure on the government.

Just a year ago, Özel faced a personal health crisis that put his vocal abilities at risk due to damage to his vocal cords. After undergoing extensive surgery in April 2024, he now finds himself in a position where his voice is more crucial than ever. Since Imamoglu's arrest, Özel has passionately denounced what he terms a 'top-down coup,' speaking out daily and leading protests.

In a symbolic act on the day of Imamoglu's detention, Özel and his team occupied the Istanbul municipality building, urging the public to take to the streets in protest. His efforts have mobilized tens of thousands of citizens nightly, sending a clear message to the government: Istanbul will not be relinquished.

Despite Erdogan's government hesitating to appoint a trustee to oversee Istanbul, Özel attributes this victory to the widespread protests. The CHP has also demonstrated its strength by recently selecting Imamoglu as its presidential candidate, with over 15 million citizens responding to Özel's call for solidarity.

Many observers believe that Erdogan underestimated the public's outrage over his blatant attack on democratic principles and Özel's ability to channel that dissatisfaction into political action. This is not the first time Özel has been underestimated; when he was elected CHP leader in November 2023, many viewed him merely as a placeholder for Imamoglu. At that time, the CHP was struggling, having failed to defeat Erdogan's ruling party in national elections, yet Özel quickly established himself as a significant political player.

Özel's demeanor, characterized by a friendly appearance and unassuming style, has often led to perceptions of him as a mild-mannered politician. However, he has shown resilience as both a pharmacist and a former leader in the Turkish pharmacists' association. He is married and has one daughter, and his recent image overhaul--shorter hair and the removal of his glasses--reflects a more dynamic presence in Turkish politics.

His leadership became particularly notable during the local elections in Spring 2024, where the CHP dealt Erdogan one of the most significant defeats of his career, making them the most voted party for the first time in 47 years. Özel's determination and willingness to confront challenges stem from experiences in his youth, where he learned to stand firm in the face of adversity.

Özel's past actions further highlight his capacity for advocacy; in 2014, he called for government oversight in mining safety, only to witness a catastrophic mining disaster shortly thereafter that claimed over 300 lives, thrusting him into the national spotlight.

As Özel gains prominence, he is increasingly targeted by government officials. State-aligned media have downplayed the protests, while Özel has faced criticism from Erdogan's communications team for allegedly tarnishing Turkey's image abroad. Currently, five legal cases are pending against the CHP and its leadership, centered around supposed irregularities in Özel's election as party leader, raising concerns about the potential for the party to be placed under government oversight.

In response, Özel has convened an extraordinary party congress to reaffirm his leadership. His strategy appears to involve maintaining public dissent and pressure on the government, with recent protests serving as a kickoff for a series of demonstrations planned across various cities in Turkey. A nationwide campaign for the release of Imamoglu has also been initiated.

While Özel is prepared to lead the opposition, the challenges he faces are significant. Erdogan retains the ability to intensify repression, as evidenced by the nearly 2,000 arrests since the protests began. In a recent interview, Özel indicated that if Imamoglu is barred from participating in future elections, the CHP would consider nominating him as an alternative candidate.
